HALF-YEARLY FIGURES ROTORUA AND BAY OF PLENTY Advice has been received from the District Employment Officer, Rotorua, Mr J. McGlone, that employment figures for a further group of industries have now been completed. These read as follows, the data applying to the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty district:— In Joinery Factories, Furniture and Cabinet Making, 13 units employ 103 males and 7 females with vacancies for 5 males.

Engineering shops, manufacture and repair of Electrical Apparatus, Cycle Assembly and Repair, Clock, Watch and Instrument Repair, employ in 2 units 74 males and 17 females with vacancies for 4 males and 2 females.

In Motor Trades, Repair and Maintenance of Motor Vehicles, 46 units employ 345 males and 28 females with vacancies for 10 males and 3 females.

Clothing and Footwear Manufacture and Footwear Repair, employ in 11 units 21 males and 69 females. There are no vacancies in this group. Eight of the males and 33 of the females employed are under 21. Brick, Tile, Concrete Products, Plaster and Board etc. figures show that 5 units employ 31 males of whom 5 are under 21. No females are employed and there are no vacancies.

Referring to the joinery and'furniture group, the District Employment Officer stated that employers in this section had commented to the effect that the shortage of timber was retarding output, and when this difficulty was overcome, the industry would require a substantial increase in staff. The shortage of parts was causing inconvenience in the motor trade. Employers in this group anticipated increased workshop activity with the easing of the petrol restrictions and there would be a corresponding increase in the demand for skilled men. Mr McGlone concluded by stressing that the present returns covered only the April position since on this first occasion employers were not required to supply data retrospectively. Consequently the present returns gave a static picture only and the full benefits of the information would not be achieved until subsequent returns made a running picture available.
