National Dancing Thrives Again Highland and National dancing, which during the war went into recess more or less, is now, in Whakatane at any rate coming swiftly into its own again. At recent socials and evenings promoted by the Caledonian Society, it is pleasing to note that many young dancers are taking the floor. A Blanket of Gulls
Residents of the Heads have remarked on the strange yet beautiful effect radiated by the sandspit on a moonlight night. The whole spit looks absolutely white, the effect being caused by hundreds of seagulls squatting on the sand.
Cigam, the Magician, Tonight! Residents are reminded that the great mystery, show of magic and sleight of hand, takes place in the Grand Theatre this evening. ‘Cigam’—read it backwards and you have the whole tenor of. the entertainment—is regarded as one of the foremost magicians of the Dominion, and has earned high tributes throughout the length and breadth of the country. His appearance in Whakatane is an unusual opportunity of seeing high class entertainment at its best.
Ski Championships
The first New Zealand ski championships since 1939 will be held from August 29 to September 5 this year, according to a report received at the annual meeting of the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand, held in Wellington. Four men’s and two women’s events will be held at Mount Cook. The numberof ski clubs has increased, it was stated. Some equipment was being made in New Zealand, and some was being imported. Hickory, the best wooi for skis, was still unobtainable.
Tram Tickets as Cigarette Papers
Cigarette smokers in Melbourne are apparently even shorter of cigarettes and cigarette papers than is the case in New Zealand. One Melbourne paper reports that the shortage has provided black market merchants with another avenue to exploit the public and packets of cigarette papers change hands in bars at Is a packet. Meanwhile smokers are hunting for all manner of expedients to overcome the shortage. Tram tickets are being used as papers apd stationery has been used without any great success. Anything that will light is being utilised by the man who must smoke. Shortage of Pianos The scarcity of pianos is not likely to be relieved for some time. Animporter of musical instruments explained that the partial lifting under the revised import schedules last September of the embargo on pianos has resulted in no immediate benefit, as South Africa and India booked up practically the entire output of the few English piano -factories that have reverted to peace-time production, states a writer in Freedom. In consequence, there will be few English pianos arriving in New Zealand until the end of the year. The price of the new English pianos will be nearly double the pre-war cost, due to higher production costs, increased freight rates and the sales tax.
