JUNE INGLESIDE

WHAKATANE CALEDONIANS POPULAR OLD-TIME DANCES The Caledonian Hall was comfortably filled last Thursday evening when the Society opened its new social season with the first of its Inglesides and presented a first-rate programme of items and dancing. The evening was devoted entirely to old-time dancing and all who participated were enthusiastic about its success.

Chief W. J. Simons acted as M.C. and kept the bright programme moving. Music was provided by the Premier Dance Band, which excelled itself in the dispensation of wellknown airs for all dancing numbers. The crowd responded well and encores were the rule. Perhaps the most popular dance was the ‘Lancers’, which drew a full floor. The Pipe Band also provided music for the extras, while items were also provided by Pipers Russell Hurst and Don McKenzie.

The ‘Haggis Ceremony’ was carried out with due ceremony, prior to a dainty supper served by the ladies and members of the Pipe Band. Once again Scotland’s traditional dish was piped in with customary dignity and laid before Chief Simons.' It was duly addressed in Burn’s celebrated words, and served up to the assembly. Enjoyable items during the evening were performed by a group of new young dancers who were given a warm reception. These were Lennie Butler (Seann Trubhais); Janice and Margaret Pithie (Highland Fling) and little Ray Coutts (Sword Dance).

Before the closing dance the Chief thanked all present for their attendance and mentioned that the open Inglesides would likewise be commencing in the near future.
