AWAKERI NEWS

WELCOME HOME EVENING The Awakeri Welcome Home Committee still has occasion to exert its energies, as on a recent occasion when Cpl. Ken Raymond was welcomed home to the district aftelr over three years serving with the 2nd N.Z.E.F. Cpl. Raymond was the guest of honour at a popular and well organised dance and the hall was crowded to capacity. Mr Col MacDonald officiated as M.C. During the evening Mr MacDonald presented the guest with an envelope containing a cheque and in a brief speech expressed the district’s appreciation of his service and conveyed their best wishes for his future. Musical honours and a good round of applause were accorded the guest, who in a few well-chosen words thanked those present for their attendance and also the district ladies from whom parcels had been received from time to time. The fifth heat of the £6 Monte Carlo was continued; the winners being Miss P. Phillips and partner. There is only one remaining heat and the final of this Monte Carlo to go and the semi-finalists are from various parts of the surrounding districts, which should create much interest when the final comes about in the near future.
