WHAKATANE BRANCH On Saturday, June 8, the members of the Whakatane branch of the above Institute met in the Borough Council Chambers. In addition to the local members, there were present the President, Mr C. Cross, and the Secretary, Mr S. G. Gouch, of the. Taui'anga Branch, as well as four visitors from the Bay of Plenty Electric Power Board staff, Opotiki. The local President, Mr Lysaght, welcomed the visitors and thanked them for coming such long distances. The evening was devoted almost entirely to the showing of technical films on a 16 mm. Bell and Howell talking projector (the property of the Parent Body), which is loaned to branches, together with a wide selection of films. For three 1 hours the Tauranga visitors operated the machine and presented the following-of the National Film Unit Revue No. 137. 1. New Zealand Water Power: Dealing with hydro power generation and coal generating stations in relation to the grid system to which they are linked, and the method of handling peak loads. 2. Coal in Westland: Dealing with the different types of mines such .as high and low level and the difficulties of transportation. 3. Electro-Chemistry: Dealing with the principals of electrolysis as applied to the storage battery and electroplating. 4. Fundamentals of Acoustics: illustrating the effect of shape and the surface finish of public halls on sound production and how the resultant waves are affected. This film also dealt with the action of the human ear and the peculiarities of Sound waves out-of-doors.
5. Sound Recording and Reproduction: As applied to the Talkie film production, the different types of sound track and how they are produced.
6. Hydrolics: Illustrating the principals based on the fact that fluids while- taking the shape of a container, cannot be compressed. 7. Vacuum Tube and Radio: Technically showing the construction of the vacuum tube, how it works and its application to radio. ~
8. Enzeds Work for Victory: Describing the construction of Nandia airfield at Fiji or more corectly the enlarging of a small aerodrome to a
size capable of handling flying fortresses all in a matter of six weeks. 9. Soil Erosion and Conservation in the Mississippi Valley: This picture graphically depicted the results of soil erosion in the ' Mississippi Valley, the impoverishment of its people, the immense damage done by flooding and the huge quantities of surface soil removed and carried out fo sea. In contract the Tennessee Valley under Government control has built dams at suitable points for flood control, irrigation, and electric power generation. Shortly after 10 p.m. supper was provided and an informal discussion on the objects of the Institute continued for an hour at the conclusion of which a hearty vote of thanks to Messrs. Cross and Couch was carried by acclamation.
