WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

GARDENING CIRCLE MEETING The May meeting of the WaimanaNukuhou Women’s Institute gardening circle, was held at the home of Mrs Wylde; the president, Mrs M. Xing, presided. There was a good attendance of members and Mrs L. Mitchell, of Auckland, gave a most interesting demonstration of floral work, the making of sprays, bouquets, etc, by wiring the flowers and foliage together. An out-of-doors competition, arranged by Mrs Wylde, finding flowers growing on the plants or shrubs was won by Mrs King. The day’s competitions were:— Best flower: Mrs Mitchell 1, Mrs Woolfield 2, Mrs Wylde 3. Best vegetable: Mrs McDonald 1, Mrs S. Eagle 2, Mrs Wylde 3. Bouquet: Mrs Woolfield 1, Mrs Wylde 2, Mrs G. Mitchell 3. The next meeting will be held at Mrs Cooper’s residence and the competition will be novelty winter decorations for a mantlepiece. After afternoon tea had been served by Mrs King and Mrs G. Mitchell, members took a stroll round the garden, which was bright with autumn flowers. At the conclusion of the meeting Mrs King thanked Mrs Wylde for the pleasant afternoon and Mrs Mitchell for her demonstration. MEETING AT EDGECUMBE The May meeting of the Edgecumbe Women’s Institute was held, as usual, in the Presbyterian Hall, with Mrs Pearse presiding. The meeting opened with the Ode while the Aspirations were read in unison. Apologies were received from several members unable to attend. It was decided to commence each meeting at 1.30 p.m. instead of 2 p.m. as in the past, so that the meetings could be concluded earlier to allow members with home and farming duties to attend the full programme. Mrs Hodson read the Dominion Federation President’s report from the ‘Home and Country’ magazine after which Mrs Blair read an interesting report on the Federation meeting held recently. After a delightful afternoon tea served by the hostesses for the day, Mrs Peck had a very interested audience for her demonstration of floral work. The most popular line was a beautiful bouquet which was afterwards presented to Mrs Wilson. Monthly competition results were won as follows: Best flower: Mrs Goldsmith 1, Mrs Carter 2, Mrs Smith 3. Chrysanthemum: Mrs Burgess and Mrs Teasdale 1, Mrs Smith 2, Mrs Learning 3. Cajrrots: Mrs Burgess 1, Chutney: Mrs Blair 1, Mrs Carter 2, Mrs Pearse 3. Sugar-bag article: Mrs Blair 1, Mrs King 2, Miss Blair 3. The meeting then closed with the National Anthem.
