WHAKATANE BRANCH The may meeting of the Whakatane Women’s Institute was conducted as New Zealand Day and the items, competitions etc. carried this out. Attendance was good and the president, Mrs Crozier, was in the chair. After the business, during which Mrs King Jnr. read a report of the recent Annual Council Meeting, Mrs N. Martin gave the Golden Thread, a reading on “Women of Other Lands.” An interesting talk by Mrs K. Stewart followed, the subject being Milford Sound. Mrs Winstone spoke to members about C.0.R.5.0. and the urgent need for help with clothes, foodstuffs etc. Prior to afternoon tea, a solo ‘Waiote Poi’ was sung by Mrs Leo Stewart and much enjoyed by members. The Roll Call, ‘A named specimen of a native shrub,’ was well responded to. Competition results were as follows: Best Flower, Mesdames Caisley and Cairns tied 1; Mrs Comer 2. Maori sketch, Mrs Crozier 1; Mrs Attwood 2. Kumaras, Mrs Cairns 1; Mrs Fennell 2. Gardening Circle A recent meeting of the Gardening Circle of the Whakatane branch of the Women’s Institute was held at Mrs Fennell’s residence at the golf course. -Readings on Lilliums and the kitchen garden were taken by all present. The Roll Call “Why I Like Gardening” brought forth a number of interesting replies. Mrs Fennell demonstrated how to remove weeds from lawns. Afternoon tea was served and a competition ‘An Impromptu Posy’ was won by Mrs Larsen. Other competition results were: (a) Large Dahlia, Mrs Hannah; (b) Best Vegetable, Mrs Hannah.
