A MAGNIFICENT EFFORT
OTAKIRI WELCOME HOME COMMITTEE £7OO COLLECTED A magnificent effort sustained throughout the war years, on the part of the Otakiri Farewell and Welcome Home Committee, is revealed in the figures concerning the various amounts collected and distributed, which were given out at the wind-up ball which took place in the Otakiri Hall on the evening of the King’s Birthday. These figures showed that a total of just under £7OO all told was collected and devoted to the needs of the men from that district who served overseas. Thirty-three boys altogether were farewelled, and thirty were welcomed home. Of the remaining three, two were discharged in England, and the usual gift from the committee forwarded to that place. The money due to the other (deceased) was handed to the next-of-kin. Each man received the sum of £l9 on his return, and a total of £650 altogether was paid out to soldiers. Money was also expended on soldiers’ parcels sent overseas. Without fear of contradiction; it can safely be said that residents of the Otakiri district did their share and more towards winning the second World War.
