LADIES’ GOLF WHAKATANE CLUB’S OPEN CONTEST INTENSIVE WEEKEND A most intensive weekend of play, coupled with glorious weather conditions, made the Whakatane Ladies’ Open Championship contest and other subsidiary competitions the most successful experienced in recent years. Visitors from Poverty Bay and other districts were warm in their praise for the links, which were generally described as ranking with the very best in the Dominion.
The Open Championship was won by Mrs McFadyen of Poverty Bay, who had played on the links on Saturday morning reducing her handicap by one, and then on Sunday morning played 3 below her new handicap. At the conclusion of the play, Mrs Winstone, ladies club .captain, welcomed the visitors and congratulated the winners of the various competitions. The vice-president, M;s Otley, then presented the trophies. Mrs McFadyen, of Poverty B xy, on behalf of all visitors thanked the Whakatane ladies for their hospitality and congratulated the club members upon their excellent links. She stated that she had played on many links but had never before had the privilege of playing on such true greens.
Details of the. various competitions were: —
Open Championship: Mrs McFadyen (Poverty Bay) won from Mi's Symmans (Whakatane) 2 and 1. Whakatane Handicap: Miss Robins (30) won from Miss Carter (22) 2 and 1.
Championship Flight: Mrs Winter (Poverty Bay) runner-up Mrs Brown (Poverty Bay). Handicap Flight: Mrs Coupe (19) (Poverty Bay) won from Mrs Otley (24) (Whakatane) at 19th. Ist Flight: Mrs Lunken (19) won from MrS’ Pearse (36) 1 up. Best Net and Gross Medal, Sunday Senior: Mrs McFadyen 83—11, 72; Sunday Junior: Miss Robins 105 —33, 72. Sunday Afternoon Senior Stableford: Mrs Carter (Opotiki) 30; Junior: Miss Robins 33; Miss Armstrong 21.
Monday Medal (Senior): Mrs Symmans 89 —12, 74; Junior: Mrs Thomas 96—19, 77. Afternoon Canadian Foursomes: Mrs Sparks (Poverty Bay) and Miss Otley.
CLARKE AND REYNOLDS CUPS The majority of the sections were decided in the Clarke and Reynolds Cups played on the Whakatane links on Saturday, but it is necessary that some of the sections be played off. Clarke Cup, section winners: No. 2 C. M. Hyland; No. 4R. J. Pattison; No. 5 T. W. Burke; No. 7 D. Luxton; No. 8 G. H. Rankin. To play off before June 15: No. 1 A. Morpeth and A. G. Cradwick; No. 3 R. Morpeth, A. Powdrell and W. Steel, medal round. TE TEKO GOLF CLUB DRAW FOR LADIES’ PLAY Following is the draw for the June Medal to be played on Thursday 6th and Sunday 9th June. Play to commence from 10 a.m. onwards: — Thursday: Mrs Thomas and Mrs Cannell; Mrs Hutton and Mrs Burr; Mrs Goodwin and Miss Murray; Mrs' Balfour and Mrs Caldwell; Mrs Linsell and Miss Linsell; Mrs Craddock and Mrs Mcßride. Sunday: Mrs Anderson and Miss Walker. - Anyone unable to play please ring Mrs Balfour, telephone 15R.
