HARBOUR BAR
BARELY SUFFICIENT WATER GENERAL IMPROVEMENT ANTICIPATED A general improvement in the condition of the Whakatane >; Harbour bar should, according to the Captain of the M.V. Toa, be noticeable from the - end of the present month. The Toa arrived at Whakatane on Sunday, and succeeded in crossing tlii bar via the Western Channel, although it was a risky undertaking. The Eastern Channel, the one previously utilised by shipping has filled considerably on the inside, where there is now under six feet of water at high tide. In the Western Channel, there is 6’ 9” on one si&9* and 7’ 6” on the other. This latter depth is necessary for boats of the Toa’s draught to cross, and this vessel was forced to almost scrape the rocks dividing the channels when making her entrance. This trouble of insufficient water on the bar is an annual occurrence at this time of the year, although during the past few months, it has been worse than it has for the past twenty years. As stated, from the end of this month, the condition of the bar should start to improve.
