Local and General

More Members Wanted At the annual meeting of the Whakatane Aero and Glider Club which took place last Wednesday evening, the President asked members to endeavour to as many others as possible to join. We would like to see some more life members come forward,” he said. The chuckle that went round the room was easily understandable, for life members come only at ten guineas a time.

Menace Decreasing The growing rat menace, deliberated upon recently by the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce is definitely decreasing. This must be so as we noticed a defunct member of the rat. population adorning the gutter in the Strand only last week. We have seen no more since, and we admit, that at this rate, the process of eliminating all the species will take a long time. Nevertheless, even one ‘corpus’ is a good sign, and we trust that the person responsible for the kill will carry on with the good work.

Phone Box Shifted Members of the public who rush to the telephone box outside Bridgers Limited to put through a rush call may be somewhat non-plussed to find that it is no longer in existence in that spot. On Wednesday, it was shifted to a position at the end of the Strand past the Road Services Office. (One man we noticed yesterday dashed up to the old site of the box in a very agitated state. Finding it wasn’t there, he hastily pushed the door open, and rang up the police to report a theft). The shifting of the booth has left a noticeable indentation in the footpath, where the feet of many citizens have stood for ages past, and we trust the council will fill ditto before some unwary pedestrian falls over same and breaks n>eck. Seriously though, unless the Deartment is contemplating erecting another both at the top end of the Strand, it would possibly have been wiser to move the present one further up in the other direction if it had to be moved at all.
