CHESS CLUB
FORMATION AT EDGECUMBE At a meeting convened by Mr E. Rogers, it was unanimously decided to form a Chess Club at Edgecumbe thus fulfilling a long felt want in the district. Officers appointed were: President: Mr E. Rogers; vice-presi-dent: Mr A. Teesdale; sec.-treasurer: Mr E. B. List. Good wishes for'the success of the new club were received from the Auckland Chess Club together with a rough draft of rules. It was left to the management committee to frame rules to govern the Edgecumbe Club and to submit them for approval at a future meeting. Membership fees were fixed at 10/6 per annum for senior members and 5/- per annum for lady and junior members., The club will be handicapped until a full supply of Chessmen can be obtained and the President remarked it was hoped to obtain by loan what the club was unable, in view of the existing shortage, to buy. Commenting later Mr Rogers said he had reason to believe Chess Clubs would be formed in other districts thus fostering the all important social spirit. The first games set down for play are to take place next Wednesday. The youthful son of an ardent Edgecumbe Chess player was heard telling his more youthful brother that “Chess is when you put a lot of those funny little things on that board—then go quiet.” The anecdote provided much laughter at the meeting.
