Boy Breaks Leg Admitted to the Whakatane hospital yesterday suffering from a broken right leg, Donald Black, the nine-year-old son of Mr and Mrs W. A. Black, of Kopuriki, is now reported to be making satisfactory progress. The fracture was sustained when playing with some heavy wheels.
Private Landing Field
It is reported that when the subcommittee set up by the Whakatane Aero and Glider Club for the purpose of going into the question of a temporary landing field was inspecting the property offered by a well known Awakeri farmer, the latter stated that even if the club did not intend using his paddock he himself intended to utilise it as his own private landing ground, and he hoped that in the near future he would have his own light ’plane installed there. Powers of Catchment Board Asked specifically whether or not Catchment Boards would have the power to make and levy fresh rates upon the settlers in the area affected, the Minister of Lands at Edgecumbe last Thursday replied in the affirmative. “If the Board is contemplating new works in the area, it is only right that someone should pay for the undertaking,” he said. “It may be an effort to control silting up, or erosion, or protective measures from flooding. The money must come from some source—-either from rates levied or from taxation.”
