REHABILITATION COST
ALMOST £2s} MILLIONS AUTHORISED Until the end of March £25,488,625 had been authorised for the purposes of the Rehabilitation Board in the re-establishment in civil life of former men and women of the Armed Forces, says a statement from the Board. Of that amount, £4,238,784 was for the purchase and development of lands for settlement by servicemen, while £227,04? was for assistance afforded Maori ex-service-men and women either by the Maori Rehabilitation Finance Committee or under the Native Land Act of 1936. Apart from this, many Maoris have been assisted under the general rehabilitation scheme in the same way as pakehas. Authorisations for rehabilitation loans and other financial assistance amounted to £18,294,166, for trade and occupational training £1,590,988, for farm training £143,317, education £433,907, blinded servicemen £21,065, grants to Disabled Servicemen’s Reestablishment League £52,000, special grants £17,834, rehabilitation allowances £534,273, intermediate scheme (for temporarily disabled men) £15,606, payments towards servicemen's travelling expenses, removals, etc., £18,939, exchange on overseas separation allowances £704.
