ROWING TROPHIES
END OF SEASON PRESENTATIONS
WHAKATANE CLUB ENTERTAINS
At a recent social function held in the Caledonian Hall, members of the Whakatane Rowing Club who had won distinction during the season were presented with trophies. The evening was informal, and those present enjoyed themselves to the utmost. Approximately a hundred guests attended, and the music supplied by the Premier Band was once again popular. Mr Bert Cutler was Master of Ceremonies.
The Club Captain, Mr Bert Norman, presented trophies to a number of crews, and extended his congratulations to more who were run-ners-up in the various events. Trophies Presented To A. Head (s), B. Cutler (3), R. Byrne (2), E. Hunt (B) and K. Dines (cox) went the Bergman Trophy, presented by Mr Bergman, a local jeweller in. 1923, and the oldest trophy that the club competes for. The Cucksey Cup, presented by Mr Tim Cucksey in 1930 was awarded to L. Carey (s), R. Byrne (3), R. King (2), D. Keepa (B) and R. Ellis (cox). The Stewart Challenge Cup, donated by Mr W. Stewart in 1938 for challenge races, holders to defeat all-comers, was presented by the donor to J. Maxwell (s), S. Dent (3), L. Stewart (2), L. Carey' (B) and K. Dines (cox). Mr Stan Dent presented the Wairere Cup to G. Dines (s), G. Moore (3), L. Carey (2), D. Keepa (B) and R. Ellis (cox). In 1938, Messrs. Stan Dent and Noel Taylor gave this cup to the club, and it has been the motive for keen competition in the past. Mr Hugh Armstrong was present to make the ward of the Mick Armstrong Memorial Cup, for which the races on closing day were held. This handsome trophy was recently handed to the Club by the Armstrong Brothers and the winning crew J. Maxwell (s), L. Carey (3), R. King (2), D. Debreceny (B) and Gattsche (cox) represented the first holders.
The cup presented by Mr S. Armstrong Sen. in 1934 to help promote local interest in rowing was also presented by Mr Hugh Armstrong to L. Carey (s), G, Moore (3), A. Head (2), P. Maxwell (B) and Gattsche (cox). - ....
V'T’ na- ’ - ■ Points Awards
For all races, points were awarded to individual members of crews. L. Carey headed the list with .points with G. Moore and E. Hunt second equal (21 points) and G. Dines (20a points). Four awards were made in that order.
Special awards more in the nature of an appreciation of their work were made to the coxwains Gattsche, Windley and Ellis, who, Mr Norman said, had proved to be exceptionally keen. The last-named, particularly, had shown great interest, and had coxed the Whakatane heavy crew into third place at the recent regatta at Ngaruawahia. After the trophies had been presented, dancing resumed. Features of the evening were a period of community singing, for which Gwen Kenyon ably played accompaniments, games, novelty dances, and three vocal solos by Miss Dorothy Stewart. Supper proved to be a delightfully tasty repast. Dancing concluded at midnight.
