VALEDICTORY
BOROUGH COUNCILLORS GATHER TRIBUTE TO MR D. V. SAUNDERS On the eve of his retirement from the position of Town Clerk, after an unbroken term of service for 14 years, Mr D. V. Saunders was guest of honour at a complimentary gathering of Borough Councillors past and present in the rooms of the Gentlemen’s Club, last Monday evening. A happy and informal three hours were spent in reminiscences and stories, and opportunity was taken of extending a warm and cordial welcome to the new appointee, Mr L. D. Lovelock, formerly of Fahiatua.
His Worship the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) in proposing the toast to the guest of the evening, said that he had given yeoman service throughout the whole period of his term. His duties had been multiplied during the war years but whatever he touched he had carried out efficiently and willingly. His courtesy had been unfailing and from his own point of view he would like to say how much his duties as Mayor, had been lightened by virtue of Mr Saunder’s efficiency. The town had grown considerably during his term of office, and it was with genuine ■regret that Councillors learnt of his decision to resign in favour of a new ■appointment. He tendered his very best wishes for his future welfare.
Other speakers were the DeputyMayor, Cr S. S. Shapley, Crs Sullivan, Canning and Creeke and exCouncillors Caisley, Prideaux ,and Otley, and Mr C. Kingsley-Smith for ■the Press.
The Mayor then presented a set •of occasional tables, which he' said conveyed the personal good wishes of all present.
Responding, Mr Saunders said that he appreciated deeply the warmth of fellowship and goodwill (extended him. Over his 14 years residence in the Borough- he had experienced nothing but unfailing hospitality and friendship. His asspciations with the council had always been most happy and he thanked the two Mayors who had held office during his term for their understanding and support. His dqtiey had been made Very pleasant. Speaking of the staff he added that here too he had encountered nothing but harmony and co-operation. He thanked all speakers for their expressions of goodwill and thoughtful .gift.
Cr Warren proposed the toast to the new Town Clerk, and whilst he warned him of the substantial issues ahead, such as the contemplated new water and drainage systems, assured him of the council’s fullest and most cordial co-operation and friendship.
Mr Lovelock was warm in his thanks and added his own tributes to the systems in vogue in the Borough office. The gathering closed after the .serving of a light supper.
