EASTERN BAY FEDERATION
The annual Council meeting of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Federation of Women’s Institutes was held in the Methodist Hall, Whakatane, on May 1, Mrs K. Brown, president of the Federation, presiding. There was a good attendance of delegates and members'many Institutes being represented. The meeting opened with the singing of a hymn and the Ode to Friendship. Mrs Brown then welcomed Mrs Chapman, M.B.E. of the Waikato Federation, and delegates and members and trusted that they would all find the day a pleasant one. Mrs Chapman extended an apology from the Tauranga Federation for its absence. The annual report and balance sheet were presented and adopted. The former showed that there were fourteen Institutes with 508 members in the E.8.0.P.F. with membership increasing each month. The V.O. reports were read and Mrs Stewart reported on the Eisteddfod held in March, which was a success in every way.
Mrs Withy stated that she had visited all Institutes except one in her area and all were working along the correct lines and were very keen. Mrs K. Brown had visited several Institutes and found them all doing well. After the luncheon adjournment, the W.I. reports for the past six months were given. The resolutions were discussed and voted upon. During the afternoon, greatly enjoyed violin solos were rendered by Mrs Larmer, Mrs Stewart playing accompanying. The election of officers resulted as under: President, Mrs K. Brown; secretary-treasurer, Mrs Mayo; committee, Mrs M. King (Press Correspondent), Mrs R. Smith, Mrs Eurgess, Mrs Ci’ozier, Mrs Baird, Mrs Robb, Mrs Gardner, Mrs R. Withy. Shoulder sprays were presented to Mrs Chapman, M.8.E., Mrs Brown and Mrs Mayo by Mrs Crozier on behalf of the Whakatane Institute. Mrs Chapman gave an interesting address on W.I. affairs, and an inspiring talk, the theme of which dwelt upon the manner in which members could, by living up to the Institute Creed, assist greatly in winning the peace. At the conclusion, Mrs Brown thanked Mrs Chapman for the most inspiring and helpful address. The day’s competitions were won as follows: Steamed pudding without fruit: Waimana 1 and 2. Thrift article: Waimana 1, Otakiri 2. Vase of flowers for effect: Woodlands 1 and 2.
The iced cake for competition was won by John Withy. The Talent Bowl was won by the Whakatane W.I. and Thornton W.I. won the Potato Shield. Afternoon tea was served and the meeting closed with the National Anthem. "
