The Goldfields Cup victor, Royal Charter, went out to make the running, galloping freely near the rails. A hundred yards from the post Bueno and Balmacara joined issue, the first named momentarily headed Royal Charter, who however came again and won by a head. Again a Winner Thirteen proficient jumpers faced the starter in the Hauraki Plains Steeplechase. Merriful carried on the running but at the top the last time round, he ran across the corner of a jump, where Etaro and Tangirere ran off. At this point Tangatapai, a five year old chestnut by Isaacs, hit the front with New Battle many lengths away. The latter then moved up and joined Tangatapai in the home run. They rose at the last obstacle together, and in a well-fought out finish New Battle won.
