THEFT CHARGES

TWO YEARS’ BORSTAL

MAORI YOUTH PUNISHED ..

Facing three charges of theft, alleged to have taken place on April 18, Kima Lawson, a Maori youth, appeared before the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Mr E. L. Walton S.M. was on the Bench. Accused, who pleaded guilty to all counts was convicted and sentenced to two years in a Borstal Institution. The charges concerned the theft of two packets of cigarettes, valued at 1/6; 11/6 in money; and 5/- in money, one packet of cigarettes and one -packet of tobacco, to a total value of 8/9.

Sergeant Farrell stated that on the date in question, accused had entered the sleeping quarters of the Whalcatane Hotel, where he had stolen the goods listed. He had been noticed leaving the building in a hurry by one of the maids, and as he made his exit, he had struck her with his open hand. Accused had had two chances in the past few months, but he was apparently treating the leniency shown him as a joke.

Referring to two previous convictions last year, the Magistrate said that he did not seem to be making, any attempt to reform.

Accused was convicted and sentenced as above.
