STUDIO CHATTER

A FEATURE COLUMN Sight of the week—those tough men, Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre, side by side, and trying to look nonchalent, as they stroll down Hollywood Boulevard exercising their pet pooches. Lucille Ball, one of the screen’s top young stars, has just been signed by 20th Century Fox for the major feminine role in “Dark Corner,” a tense mystery story based on the book by Leo. C. Rosten. 20th Century Fox seems to have gone to the dogs at present—“ Three Little Girls In Blue,” “Cluny Brown,” “Dark Corner” and naturally, “It Shouldn’t Happen to a Dog” .all call for canine actors in the cast. Laureen Becall (‘The Look’) gave her second command performance at Buckingham Palace on New Year’s Day, Previously their Majesties had seen her in Warners’ “To Have And Have Not.” Repeat occasion, by request of the royal’ household was the screening of “Confidential Agent,” in which she plays opposite Charles Boyer.

Noticing a row of ringlets—not her own—pinned on Vivian Blaine’s tresses on the “Three Little Girls In Blue” set, a horse got the wrong impression that they were made of hay, and helped itself to a mouthful. The pretty Miss Blaine saw the funny side, but the director did not. Half an hour was spent in restitching and grooming the coiffure back into trim.

Redheads! You would think would be plenty to choose from around Hollywood, but the search is' still going on for an actress to play Barbara, glamorous redheaded mistress of Charles 11, in “Forever Amber.” With most of the principal roles already cast, John Stahl, who is directing the film, has tested 23 actresses for the role to date, without, finding one who matches the picture of the notorious hussy drawn by Kathleen Windsor, and playing an important part in the picture.

Regent: “This Love Of Ours” (May 11, 13 and 14). Stars are Claude Rains (‘Phantom of the Opera’), Merle Oberon and Charles Korvin. A newcomer to New Zealand, “This Love Of Ours” opened at Auckland during Easter. ‘The N.Z. Herald’ critique concerning it was not very good, but it must be remembered that this is only one man’s opinion’ With this criticism in mind, local

audiences will have the opportunity of establishing their own opinions, and will be able to weigh them up with those of the Herald critic. It must also be remembered that any picture must have a certain amount of support guaranteed or it would not be worth the releasing. With such a strong cast, however, it would be very surprising indeed if “This Love Of Ours” did not prove excellent entertainment.
