THE JUNIORS
UNITED v TANEATUA The Whakatane United Club fielded easily the best junior team of the day. Their pack, which stayed together well, and their fast moving back line was a combination which the inexperienced Taneatua team could do little against. Outstanding in the United team was Martin, a newcomer, who played at centre. Although he shone at this position, his whole style was that of a half-back and the Club would be well advised to try him there. Rutherford (first five) and Henderson (second five-eighths) played good solid games whilst Hunt on the wing displayed plenty -of dash. Gartshore was a safe fullback. Star players on the Taneatua side were Green (forward) and Hill (second five-eighths) both of whom displayed a- good knowledge of Rugby.
The final score was 20 to nil in favour of United. Scorers were Butler, Hunt (2), Goodall (2) and Ward. Marton converted one try. Mr H. E. Green refereed. Poroporo v Ruatoki This match was fairly even, but Ruatoki lagged in the second half, giving Poroporo several easy tries, taken by and large, Poroporo displayed a better combination and a good style of offensive play! Ihia and Bidois (wing three-quarters) and T. Brown (front row) were prominent. Melbourne (second fiveeighths), Paruru (forward) and Hohua (wing) played well for Ruatoki.
The final whistle found the, score board reading 15—6 in favour of Poroporo, whose tries came from Nuku (2), Bidois (2) and Marton. Hohua was responsible for Ruatoki’s 6 points. Mr G. Oswald refereed.
