Service Rendered By Banks
“I am not sure whether I am here as a temporary banker or a permanent lawyer,” said Mr A. T. Donnelly, chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand, when he responded to the toast of “Business Associates” at a dinner held by the New Zealand Society of Accountants. He thought he could best illustrate the position of the Bank of New Zealand by telling a cricketing story. “An umpire was informed that he had given a wrong decision, and when he asked his critic where he had been he received a reply that he had been in the back row of the stand,” said Mr Donnelly. ‘The umpire replied: ‘What a fool 1 was to stand out in the sun all day.’ That explains the position of the bank.” Mr C. M. Bowden, M.P., who proposed the toast, said the banks in New Zealand had rendered a great service in developing the country and fostering trade and industry, and accountants were proud to be associates of bankers. *
