MANAWAHE’S APPRECIATION

RETURNED MEN WELCOMED Manawahe showed on Easter Saturday how it appreciated the war service of its boys, when about 30 returned servicemen were entertained at a dinner and in the evening at a dance. On both occasions the hall, the interior of which was decorated with evergreens and flags for the occasion, was filled to capacity. A well-laden table for the guests was placed down the centre of the hall. Preparations for the dinner were undertaken by the farmers’ wives and daughters and they made an excellent job of it. During the afternoon refreshments in plenty were made available to all others present.

Mr D. Dennehy who was toastmaster dealt with a lengthy list in a masterful way and the remainder of the programme also was carried out to' the letter.

In welcoming the guests Mr Dennehy expressed the warm thanks of the district for their services and said that the day’s function was some expression of that appreciation. He also referred to the supreme sacrifice paid by some of the lads who would not return and a two minutes silence was solemnly observed by the gathering. Each guest was presented with some suitable article to mark the occasion and was also asked to propose or respond to a toast.

The day, memorable to all present, was brought to a close at about 5 p.m. The hall was then prepared for the dance, held in the evening, which proved to be as great a success as the afternoon’s entertainment.
