DROWNED IN A DRUM
MAORI INF ANT’S FATE ACCIDENT WHEN DRINKING' A sad fatality occurred at Waiohou last weekend when a five year old Maori boy, Trevor Savage, foster son of Mr and Mrs Walter Savage, fell headfirst into a large drum of water 1 arid was drowned before he could be assisted out. The incident occurred about 1 a.m., when the boy, waking up, declared his intention of taking a drink. He left the house and going outside apparently attempted to lean over the side of the drum and reach down to the water with his mouth. In doing so it is surmised that he overbalanced and was drowned. The occupants of the house, becoming anxious at his failure to return, investigated and found him still in the position described. All attempts at resuscitation failed. An inquest, under the District Coroner, Mr C. S. Armstrong, was opened on Saturday and adjourned sine die.
