EXAMINATION RESULTS

TWO YEARS COMPARED WHAKATANE PUPILS i In the report which the First Assistant teacher of the Whakatane District High School (Mr J. E. Bigelow) presented to the meeting of householders which took place last Wednesday evening for the purpose of electing a new School'Committee, a comparison of examination results for the years 1944 and 45 was listed. In the Public Service Entrance Examination, 1944, 7 pupils sat and 4 passed. For the same exam, in 1945, 11 sat and 6 passed.

The 1944 School Certificate Examination registered a 100 per cent pass for Whakatane pupils, 13 sitting and passing. In 1945, 20 sat, 10 passed, 5 were awarded partial passes, and 5 failed.

University Entrance

1944 was the year in which the accrediting of University Entrance came into force. In that year, 1 pupil was accredited the exam., 3 sat and passed, and a further 3 sat and failed. The following year, 1945, all six prepared to sit were accredited. Three Higher Leaving Certificates were awarded in 1944, and 4 in 1945.

In 1944, Margaret Bigelow, after four years at Whakatane District High School and one at Epsom Grammar, obtained a University scholarship and a Lissie Rathbone Scholarship, being first for New Zealand in history and second in Eng lish. In the same year, John Head was one of the ten boys selected for admission to Duntroon Military College, Australia, whilst in 1945, Graham Boswell was also selected.
