The Public Library
Discussing the Whakatane Public Library at the Borough Council meeting last Monday, Cr Good said that the membership was 125, which was small by comparison with other centres. This was due mainly to the fact that there were several very active commercial libraries in the town and also to the comparative smallness of the allowance made over to the committee.
Hospital Secretarial Costs Discussing the projected increase in the salary to the Hospital Board’s secretary, at the Board meeting on Thursday, Mr J. Mullins, the chairman, said that figures taken out from the staff of the secretary’s firm who had been engaged on straightout hospital work during the past year, showed that their salaries alone amounted to £355, to which could be added a proportion of the rent estimated at £7B—making a total of £433 which did not leave much of the existing salary of £665.
“The Maori Race” An important book under this title has just been published giving the facts concerning the Maoris and liquor as revealed in the recent Royal Commission of Licensing. This book which is of wide interest, presents the original documents and deals particularly with the difficult King Country question. These are facts that all should know who are interested in the welfare of the Maoris. Published by N.Z. Aliance at 1/6, and obtainable from E. T. Tate, Matata. Advt.
Proposed Access Route The Chamber of Commerce in a special resolution last Thursday evening expressed its determination to unanimously support the proposed route of the Tauranga State Highway into Whakatane, which will be represented to Hon. R. Semple on his visit to the district next month.
Footbridge Near Paper Mills The P.W.D. has answered the Borough Council’s query as to the approximate cost of constructing a footbridge across the river opposite the Paper Mills, and has quoted the sum of £ISOO. This matter was discussed by the Council last Monday and will be referred to the Paper Mills management for mutual consideration.
Bookmakers’ Telephones In the last two years 200 bookmakers in New Zealand have lost telephones. These have been disconnected as a result of telephone regulations providing that any telephone used for bookmaking or installed in premises associated with convictions for bookmaking should be removed. After losing a telephone through such a conviction, however, a bookmaker might secure the use of another, not listed in his name, without the knowledge of the Post and Telegraph Department.
