FARMERS’ SOCIAL STANDING
j “While farmers are looked down upon as ‘cockies’ you are not going to get young men to take on the land,” said Mr F. S. Atchison, president of the Dominion Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs, when addressing the Auckland Optimists’ Club. Mr Atchison pointed out that young men on the land were some-
times made to feel at a disadvantage socially, and he suggested that more attention should be paid to the provision of short-term bursaries at agricultural colleges, a greater variety of social activities in rural areas and the encouragement of sport in farming communities.
