PERSONAL

After spending a holiday of four weeks in Whakatane, Mr Herbert Smith of San Francisco, U.S.A., is at present waiting for next boat to take him back to his homeland. Mr Smith, who is a brother of Mrs G. A. Brabant, of Whakatane, has travelled extensively and 44 years ago (when the population of Auckland was but 70,000) lived in this country for two years, during which time he was engaged at Andrew’s Mill, Paeroa. He also served with the No. 2 Hauraki Rifles. He is at present employed by one of the largest non-ferrous foundries in San Francisco. His considered opinion (and a very gratifying one it is) is that there is no country in the world to compare with New Zealand, and he hopes before long, to return to this country to settle permanently.
