OBITUARY

MR WILLIAM JOHN GAULT The death occurred last week of Mr William John Gault, a very old resident of the Opotiki district. Deceased was born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, in 1857. He came out to New Zealand in 1879, in the barque Hudson, the voyage lasting 116 "days. After working for a few years in Westland Province he came to Opotiki in 1884, purchasing an undeveloped property at Otara. In that year he married Miss S. Steele, who had arrived from Ireland the previous year.

They continued to farm successfully until 1928, when they retired and went to live in Auckland. In 1942 they returned to Opotiki. Mrs Gault died three and a half years ago. The late Mr Gault leaves one son and jfchere are three grandchildren. Two brothers and three sisters survive him in Northern Ireland.
