ACCESS REQUIRED

WAIMANA FARMERS REPRESENTATION

COUNTY COUNCIL TO INVESTIGATE

Waiting on the Whakatane County Council at its meeting last week Messrs. Yeoman, Smith and O’Brien requested the formation of a road serving their properties at Waimana and known as Banks Road. They sought mainly a summer road whereby fertiliser could be transported and stock removed. Mr Yeoman said that the road was sometimes known as Kirk’s Road, and was winding and tortuous. It was practically being maintained by the settlers immediately concerned and that had proved a difficult job. Mr Smith was a newcomer and had taen up 1300 acres which he was now engaged in breaking in. If the road were properly opened it would

give access to a wide area which was now lying idle. Messrs. Smith and O’Brien also spoke. The chairman (Mr J. L. Burnett) promised the deputation that the Council would give the matter sympathetic consideration but suggested that the question of bridges should not be raised at the present juncture. After the speakers had withdrawn it was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee to make an inspection and to report back to the Council.
