SATURDAY’S SPORTS
PRINCESS BEVERLEY SCORES AGAIN . MARCHING TEAMS PAR EXCELLENCE WEATHER LIMITS CROWD “I want to thank you all for your patronage here today and to extend a hearty welcome to the visiting teams of Marching Girls,” said Mr L. Brown, president of the Whakatane branch of the R.S.A. when addressing the crowd at Saturday’s Sports Gala promoted by the committee sponsoring Princess Beverley’s candidature. He went on to say that he was sure those who did not win would appreciate the fact that they were assisting in a very worthy cause .and intimated that the campaign proper closed on April 13.
The gathering though an undoubted social success suffered somewhat from lack of public support. Possibly this was due to the unsettled weather which was responsible for several passing showers during- the afternoon. On the other hand those who did attend were loud in their praises as to the general standard of the sports and of the marching events in particular. The meeting was marked by a happy friendly spirit which had everyone in high good humour. The highlight of the day was the marching contest for a first prize of £lO. Eight teams competed including the latest district group from Taneatua, smartly attired in black and white and representatives from Ngongotaha and Waihi. The marching was spectacular and inspiring and drew unstinted applause from the crowd. Music for the occasion was supplied by the Whakatane Pipe Band and the girls when lined up m&ae a brave display. The winners, Ngongotaha, a team wmch has already made a name for itself elsewhere gave a perfect demonstration and were closely followed by the local Basketball girls who were also outstanding.
The athlelics suffered from a pausity of entrants and fields of tnree and four were all that contested the distance events. The novelty events however attracted considerable attention and few will forget the Wheelbarrow Derby, and Bert Cut--ler’s devastating sweep home to victory.
In the juvenile section there was plenty of interest and no little excitement and a full programme was run off without a hitch. The committee is to be congratulated on its effort which broadly speaking was well worth while. Nor must we forget Mr Freddie Burt on the mike who was once again the life and soul of the gathering.
