ROWING
Whakatane in the limelight SUCCESS AT NGARUAWAHIA The Whakatane Rowing Club carried the colours for Whakatane at the Ngaruawahia Regatta (one of the biggest regattas in the Dominion) on Saturday, March 18.
One of the two crews that took part brought home quite a large slice of the “bacon” having received a meritorious third in the Heavy Maiden race.
This was a very creditable performance in view of the fact that 18 representative crews from various parts of the North Island competed and such formidable opponents as Tauranga and Hamilton and crews from other well known clubs took part, and were numbered among the vanquished.
Their success is the reward for weeks of arduous training, and on this score alone, the members of each crew deserve their well-earn-ed success. The Whakatane crews were as follows:—
Open Maiden Fours: L. Carey (s), E. Hunt, G. Dines, G. Moore. Cox, Bob Ellis. Youths: G. Dmes (s), E. Hunt, A. Moore, G. Moore. Cox, Bob Ellis. The Saturday Evening Post writes the following: “The keenness of the country rowers is commendable. Whakatane making its first appearance for some considerable time, entered two crews. Heavy Maiden and Youth. In the former event they went a surprisingly good race and were rowing better than anyone at the finish where they were third.”
