BAY AERO CLUB

SUGGESTION FROM TAURANGA

OPOTIKI APPROVAL A meeting of those interested in flying in the Opotiki district was held in the Opotiki Borough Council Chambers on Wednesday night with the object of considering a suggestion from Tauranga that Opotiki, Whakatane and Tauranga should combine in the. proposed Bay of Plenty Aero Club. Mr R. Parkes was elected to the chair and Mr B. Hunt acted as secretary.

The chairman opened proceedings by remarking that he was disappointed to see such a moderate attendance, as, judging by enquiries made regarding the proposed club,

there was a far greater number of prospective members. A letter received from the secretary of the Tauranga Club was then read, advising that two Tiger Moth planes were being made available for purchase, and that they were eligible for affiliation with the Royal New Zealand Aero Club.

They asked that a meeting be called in Opotiki of local flying enthusiasts, pointing out that it was Tauranga’s wish to form a Bay of Plenty Aero Club, incorporating Whakatane and Opotiki, and to affiliate with the R.N.Z.A.C. as Bay of Plenty rather than Tauranga Aero Club.

The chairman stressed the financial aspect of starting any new club, ground facilities, purchase of aircraft etc., and deemed it advisable to accept Tauranga’s offer.

Mr Chambers was asked his views as he had knowledge of the equipment necessary, and he said that it would be very hard to start an aero club in Opotiki, at present at any rate, owing to the equipment necessary.

After several others present had expressed their views, it was decided to write to the Tauranga Club, thanking them for their offer, and advising that Opotiki was enthusiastic over the proposition, but would like fuller details.

Mr Stewart also suggested that they be asked to send a club member, if possible, to address the next meeting to be held in Opotiki on receipt of a communication from Tauranga.

The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
