The Bay of Plenty Beacon Published Tuesdays and Fridays. FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 1946

Local and General

Edgecumbe Pig Sale An additional item included in the Edgecumbe Pig Sale on Monday next is a line of 60 good wether lambs.

Boys’ Band Competition The winner of the recent competition for a fancy cloth, held under the auspices of the Whakatane Boys Band was Mrs A. E. Cockerell (Whakatane) with No. 47.

Large Membership According to the statement of receipts and payments read at the annual general meeting of the Whakatane Rod and Gun Club on Tuesday evening, the club has a total membership of 133, 17 of whom are 194647 members.

Carnival Figures

Try as we might, we have been almost totally unable to persuade any of the Carnival Committees to state the number of votes which have so far been recorded by their respective queens. Apparently a number of members on the committees 'were born very close to Aberdeen, for they are very unwilling indeed to release information regarding the subject. This much we do know, however —Princess Pam leads Princess Beverley by some 2000 votes.

Superior Running Those who have attended sports meetings in the Bay this season will no doubt have noticed the superior style of R. J. Dawson in the distance athletic events. After a recent meeting in Wanganui, at which Dawson ran, the following note appeared in the Wanganui Herald: ‘A Whakatane distance man won the 100yds run in really superior style. R. J. Dawson from the Bay of Plenty Centre was the only runner of note in this event. He made his run in good time. Opposition, what there was of it, withered before him, and he had the track to himself from the bottom of the final straight. He

ocked a creditable 2min 28 l-ssec.’

Reduced Power Rates In view of the reduced power rates initiated by the Bay of Plenty Power Board, the Whakatane Born ough Council decided last Monday evening to bring its own rates into line, and the matter was referred to the Finance Committee with full authority to act. It is estimated that the reductions proposed will mean a loss of £IOOO annually to the Electric Power Account.
