CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS SINGLES

EXECUTIVE FOURS i E. C. Budd, the singles champion of the Rotorua Bowling Club for the present season earned recognition as the champion of the Bay of Plenty Centre’s district on Saturday at the Whakatane Club’s greens at Apanui when he annexed the Champion of Champions’ Cup in contests with the winning singles players of other clubs in the Bay, It was the second success of a Rotorua player since the formation of the Centre, W. A. Knaggs having previously been the holder of the cup in 1938. The contest was played on the two-life principle by six club singles champions Mr C. Good representing Whakatane. Although the weather was good, the greens were rather difficult. It was soon evident that the strongest contenders would be Budd or R. Hedley, of Opotiki. This pair met for the first time in the second round, when Hedley won, and left Budd with only one remaining life. On their second contest later in the day Budd reversed the decision by a comfortable margin, and then secured the bye into the final. Hedley proved too strong for O. Knight (Te Puke), but in the final was outdrawn by Budd, and gave up after the 19th head when the Rotorua player was leading 22—10. Following were the results:— First Round: R. Hedley (Opotiki) beat O. Knight (Te Puke);-E. Budd (Rotorua) beat C. Good (Whakatane); D. Ferguson (Taneatua) beat E. Morice (Opotiki Citizens). Second Round: Hedley beat Budd; Knight beat Ferguson; Morice beat Good.

Third Round: Knight boat Morice; Budd beat Ferguson; Hedley a bye. Fourth Round: Budd beat Hedley; Knight a bye. Fifth Round; Hedley beat Knight; Budd a fey§, Final; Budd beat Hedley,
