SATURDAY’S SFORTS Sir, —The Returned. Services’ Association are holding a campaign for funds for a Welfare Memorial, and the objects have been placed before the Whakatane County so frequently that a further explanation should not be necessary. The Taneatua people shelved a scheme that they had contemplated carrying out this year to perpetuate the memory of the local lads who will never return to their little village. It was to be purely a local effort and after the R.S.A. representatives put their plan before us we agreed to use all our efforts to help the Appeal. We now find that another riding in the County has arranged a Gymkhana on our day, for a local benefit, I understand. We would have appreciated a fair spin. The appeal is for funds to help those men whose sacrifices over six years of war have made it possible to hold “local efforts” in this year 1946. Are we forgetting already? Yours etc., E. SEMMENS.
