Ohope Spotlight As “Figgs”- Burt poured out his enchanting melodies to an appreciative audience last Satrday evening, a number of our “nice young things” were cought between the floodlights. A feature of the evening was the request programme including old-time dances. A glance around revealed Mr and Mrs I. T. Takle, Auckland; Mr and Mrs Courtley, Napier; Misses Leita and Hazel Thomason, Dorothy Stewart, Maurine Brown, Peggy Hooper, Marie Reckitt, Taupo, and Betty Taylor, Wanganui.
Whakatane Rod and Gun Club Members, intending members and supporters of the Whakatane Rod and Gun Club are reminded of the annual general meeting to be held in the County Council Chambers on Tuesday next 12th March. Now that this newly formed club is in full swing, and the cartridge supply much easier, members may look forward to a full programme in the future. The fishing contest is attracting considerable interest, with Mr C. Zinsli’s entry at present heading the field. The annual smoke concert is another attraction. The huge success of last year’s function will assure that this event will be an annual fixture. All sportsmen are cordially invited to the annual meeting on Tuesday next at 7.30 p.m.
Opening of Red Cross Building
As afternoon tea is to be provided at the opening of the new Red Cross Building in Commerce Street on Saturday afternoon (tomorrow), Red Cross members are asked to bring cakes or savouries if possible.
Te Teko Garden Party Foremost in the attractions in aid of Princess Ellen is the forthcoming Garden Party to be held at the residence of -Mrs T. Jacques on the Galatea Road on Saturday, March 16. The R.S.A. Memorial Fund should benefit substantially as a result for there is a cordial invitation open to all, and besides a Bring and Buy Stall, Croquet, Clock Golf, a Maori Hangi, Cake and Produce Stalls, there will be special items by way of Maori Action Songs and Waiatas.
Family Benefit Payments Commencing with the payment due in March, 1946, family benefits are to be paid on the 11th of each month instead of on the 25th as hitherto. If the 11th of the month falls due on a Saturday, or a Monday which is a departmental holiday, payment is to commence on the preceding Friday. The change of date to the 11th of the month has been made to facilitate the handling of the largely increased volume of family benefit payments expected in April, 1946, and subsequent months consequent on Government making this benefit universal at 10/- a week for each child.
