WRESTLING

WHAKATANE DOMINION CHAMPIONS COMPETING Local wrestling fans will have an opportunity on 23rd March of seeing the greatest programme ever staged anywhere in the Bay of Plenty.

The main attraction will be the Professional Heavyweight contest between Ken Kenneth, 17st. 21bs., and Joe Julian 18st. Kenneth, who has beaten Lofty Blomfield, had a very successful season in Australia, where he gained decisions over leading American and Australian wrestlers. A colourful, and skilled exponent of the ring, Kenneth is a great crowd pleaser, and delights in “mixing it” and forcing the pace from the first gong.

His opponent, Joe Julian, is a formidable wrestler, and is noted for his tremendous strength and ability to take and give out punishment. His great weight, 18st., enables him to wear down lighter men with solid, steam-roller tactics.

Both men are eager for the verdict, in view of the American team arriving shortly.

Amateur preliminaries include Charlie Jones, ex New Zealand and Auckland .Lightweight Champion, who meets N. Sakey, ex Auckland Champion. Both are contenders for the 1946 National title, and provide bright, fast bouts. E. Douglas, Waihi, Middleweight Champion, meets H. Smith of Paeroa. J. Frewin, Featherweight Champion of Ohinemuri, is matched with M. Hearn, of Waihi, in what should be an outstanding bout. The other match will be B. Dunstan, lOst. 41bs., of Waihi, who meets an experienced wrestler in M. Davies, lOst. 61bs., of Hamilton, and it is possible that other matches will be arranged also. Altogether, the programme is quite worthy of the Auckland Town Hall, and is a great scoop for the newly formed Whakatane Wrestling and Boxing Association, who are conducting the evening for R.S.A. funds. Box plans open at C. S. Arm-, strong’s Bookshop on 12th March, and seats will be in great demand.
