CURSE OF TUBERCULOSIS
RETIRING CHAIRMAN’S REMARKS STRONG DRINK CONDEMNED Mr A. J. H. Kirkham, who is retiring from the chairmanship of the Waipu Hospital Board after having served a period of 17 years, at the latest meeting of the board reviewed his term of office and referred to the great progress made by the board'in caring for the sick.
“Tuberculosis on the Coast is our greatest curse,” he added. “The Health Department is initiating new preventive measures, and we hope that in the near future with the cooperation of the people, a stranglehold will be obtained upon this disease.
“Strong drink is one of the causes of its spread, and it is sad to see many of our splendid young men go the way they are going. Our Maori people, I understand, have arranged for tribal committees to check abuses but up to thepresent they have not been given authority to act. We hope that shortly they, like their Rotorua brethren will be able to act. Drinking glasses, I am told, are a source of danger and sooner or later a strict inspection and improved method of washing glasses should be arranged.”
