TE TEKO GYMKHANA

SUCCESSFUL MEETING HELD

. LARGE ENTRIES IN CHOPS

Once again Te Teko upheld its reputation for running first class Gymkhanas when the 1946 meeting took place recently. Generally, the attendance and entries were very good, although those in the Athletic section showed a tendency to lag. The financial results were not as large as expected, owing no doubt to the effects of the drought on farmers’ cheques. Ring entries were'good, and the class of horses seen was equal to any witnessed in the Bay in recent times. Competition in the jumping events particularly was keen, and the prize money was well distributed among competitors from all parts of this district as well as Murupara, Opotiki, Rotorua, Pukehina and Te Puke.

The programme of chopping events was run off without a hitch. Record entries were received, in one chop, there being no less than 33 starters. The automatic judging machine measured up to all expectations, and recorded the winners without any shadow of doubt. Although the entries in the athletic events were disappointing, there were a number of very close finishes. Dead heats for first in handicap events resulted on two occasions.

The catering was in the capable hands of the Te Teko ladies, whilst Mr Freddie Burt filled his usual position behind the mike. A feature of the day was the full list of events for children, from tiny tots upwards. These were well entered into and supplied plenty of fun for the kiddies.

On the whole, the day should assist greatly in placing Princess Ellen, in support of whom the event was run, well in the lead.
