STATE OF NEGLECT
WHAKATANE SALEYARDS HEALTH DEPARTMENT’S COMPLAINT The Acting Medical Officer of Health (Gisborne Health District) complained officially to the Whakatane County Council regarding the state of neglect and disrepair obtaining at the Whakatane Saleyards. It was stated that the conveniences were in a bad state.
The yards, pens and runs were not cleansed in accordance with Regulation s—which definitely required every pen, passageway, etc., to be cleansed within 24 hours of the termination of a sale. No provision was made to carry off surface drainage, and this was at present running down into an undrained depression, which caused an accumulation of stagnant water. It was suggested that a notice be served on the licensee in order that the area be made to comply with the regulations. The council decided to refer the letter to Messrs. Dalgety and Co. and to back up the requirements of the Health Department for immediate action.
