The Bay of Plenty Beacon Published Tuesdays and Fridays. FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 1946

Local and General

‘Orphanage Day’

Earthquake Recorded An earthquake which was felt generally throughout the Whakatane district and particularly at Ohope, occurred on Tuesday afternoon, just after 5.30 p.m. The tremor lasted several seconds, and was sufficient to set electric lights swinging, and wireless masts swaying. Bitten by Dog

Four years old Jimmy Moko, son of Mrs M. Moko, Waimana, was admitted to the Whakatane Public Hospital early this week, having been bitten in several places on the face by a dog. The animal was not a wild one, but apparently attacked the child when he started teasing it. His condition is reported to be satisfactory.

Burden to the Ratepayers “Native lands and Crown lands are definitely a burden to the people who are paying rates,” said Cr L. Luxton at last Tuesday’s meeting of the Whakatane County Council. “It is not a fair thing,” he said, “that these lands should continue to go rate free while others shouldered their responsibility and carried them. The time was overdue when something had to be done to relieve the present intolerable position.”

Poultry at Show

Welcome Rainfall

The rainfall # over the weekend, which was recorded in Whakatane and on the Rangitaiki Plains, measured not quite half an inch. On Friday morning, .22 inches fell, and during Saturday night, a further .20 inches, the total being .42 inches. Though the rain was not heavy, it was light and penetrating, and is calculated to have done much good towards restoring pastures. Actually a fall of several inches is required before any complete restoration can be claimed.

The annual collection on behalf of the Auckland Orphanages United Council, throughout the Whakatane County has been fixed for October 25 next in common with other centres throughout the Province.

Pig Championships at Show Owing to a misunderstanding the awards in the Pig Section at the recent Show were credited incorrectly. The true position is as under: Class 199, Berkshire Boar over 14 months, Ist Est. F. J. Reynolds (Champion and Supreme Champion), 2nd, Rangitaiki Dairy Company, and 3rd, S. J. Black and T. Fowell.

Opouriao Anniversary Programme

In connection with the Opouriao Fiftieth Aniversary, the committee is keenly alive to the necessity of re-living if possible some of the early incidents. Costuming and other details are in the process of careful overhaul. In connection with the Maori haka items it has been decided in deference to Maori custom that the teams will be 18 boys and 8 girls. Remember the date, Monday, March 11 at Taneatua Domain.

The poultry section of the recent Whakatane and Rangitaiki A. and P. Show attracted a total of 93 entries as compared with 54 entries received at the last Show held in 1941. The exhibits included a number of birds from leading Auckland fanciers. It was gratifying to note that local exhibitors carried off the honours by winning the special awards notably Mr H. R. Jackson in White Leghorns and Mr R. F. Smith in the Australorp and Black Orpington classes. A highlight of the Show was provided by P. Farnsworth of Poroporo who exhibited two Golden Pheasants whose brilliant plumage evoked general admiration.
