COMMITTEE'S MONTHLY MEETING
FUTURE WORK DISCUSSED The monthly meeting of the Whakatane School Committee took place at the High School last Wednesday evening, Messrs. J. W. Wilson (chairman), T. C. Johnston, H. G. Dainton, W. E. Armstorng, F. W. Lysaght, H. D. Pdterson and Rev. J. C. J. Wilson being present. An apology was recieved from Mr L. R. Spring. Accounts totalling £Bl 14s 3d including £4O for school cleaning purposes were passed for payment. A reply was received from the Education Board with regard to the motion picture projector which the committee suggested should be purchased for the school, stating that the Board was not in a position to authorise grants for such equipment. If however, the committee had sufficient credit after all commitments had been met to the end of the present quarter, the Board would grant its permission for the purchase provided the committee notified the amount it intended to spend, and the various sources from which the money was to come. Notification was received from the Board that it had accepted the tender of Boon Sullivan Luke Ltd., Whakatane, for additions to the school. The timber had already been ordered, and it was hoped that a start would be made in three or four months. The proposed Home Life Block was not included in the tender accepted. Staff Appointments
The following new teachers have been appointed by the Board to the Whakatane District High School, the position to take effect as from the beginning of the 1946 school year : Miss J. H. Ross, as Grade A 5 Secondary Assistant Mistress in place of Miss Lenz; Miss O. Wells as Grade A 5 Secondary Assistant Mistress in place of Mr Johnston; Mr P. R. P. Bryers as new Grade A Assistant Master; Miss K. M. N. Hobson as new Grade B Assistant Mistress; Miss A. M. Watson as Grade A Assistant Mistress in place of Miss Goodall; Miss N. W. Chambers, pending Mr Bryers taking up his duties; Miss F. M. J. Irvine as Assistant in the Secondary Department pending the appointment of a successor to Miss Kemble. Visiting Committee’s Report
The report from the Visiting Committee, which last month consisted of Messrs. Paterson and J. W. Wilson, was received, and a number of recommended purchases authorised. A scheme concerning the woodwork technical branch was discussed, and favourably received by the committee. Outlining the idea, Mr Paterson said that at present, as was usual, the younger woodwork classes made small utility articles. The elder classes, however, were making scale models of sheds and houses all with proper joints and fittings. The scheme was that these classes should make a full sized shed in place of the models upon which they were now engaged., The instructor had agreed to the proposal and was drawing up complete plans and specifications, and would submit a price for materials. The shed would be useful for storing school equipment. Raising the question of more concreting work, the chairman sa,id that the committee had in hand, the sum of £46 from donations made last year. He suggested that with this sum, the entrance by the swimming baths would be concreted, and a path formed. The Board’s policy now with regard to such work was that while it supplied materials, the committee concerned must supply the labour. It was decided to contact Mr H. E. Mahy and obtain a quote for the work.
Headmaster’s Report
The Headmaster’s (Mr I. B. Hubbard) report showed the school rolls as follows: Infant School—lso (increase 30); Middle School—3l2 (increase of 8); High School—22B (increase of 10). Total—69o (increase Of 48). During the present hot weather, the report stated, the school baths had proved very popular. They were emptied and refilled regularly twice each week.
The question of heating the Bandroom during the coming winter, which arose from the report, was discussed, and it was decided to contact the Band Committee advising
that the School Committee was considering installing another small stove. The committee also decided to write again to the Board, drawing its attention to the need for showers at the school. The new visiting committee was appointed in the persons of the .Secretary, Mr T. C. Johnston and Rev. J. C. J. Wilson. At the conclusion of the meeting, the Chairman read a letter from Mr H. E. Otterburn, of England, thanking the Committee and Headmaster of the Whakatane School for the very considerate treatment his two children Jennifer and Jill had received whilst in New Zealand during the war years. The two kiddies mentioned were residing with Mr and Mrs S. Whitworth, Louvain Street, Whakatane.
