MR BRUCE WATTS’ EXPERIENCE
RESCUED FROM RIOTERS An item of interest concerning a Whakatane resident, Mr Bruce Watts, formerly of Armstrong and Co. Ltd.’s Garage, the Strand, and who is at present serving overseas with Unrra is contained in a report on the rioting in Alexandria. The report states: — ‘Demonstrators in Ismailia Square attacked a New Zealand member of Unrra, Mr Bruce Watts, who was wearing both New Zealand and Unrra shoulder flashes. They dragged him out of gharry, but the police carried him to safety. Mr Watts, who was slightly injured, dryly commented: “I come here to help the people and they try to kill me.”
