THE VICTORY SHOW

RECORD CROWD ASSEMBLES

HIGH STANDARD ENTRIES

WARM TRIBUTE TO ASSOCIATION

The Victory Show, promoted by the Whakatane and Rangitaiki A. -and P. Society last Wednesday was •a marked success and ,a glowing tribute to the organisation and con, trol exercised by the executive officers and stewards of the Association. Favoured with continued fine weather the Show drew a record -crowd to the grounds and surpassed in excellence all pre-war standards. A remarkable feature was the fine response by district farmers and .horse owners who came from as l'ar afield as Gisborne and Hamilton as well as all parts of the Bay of. Plenty. In view of the handicaps -and difficulties ruling at the present time we have nothing but the warmest praise for the splendid effort put forward by the farming community -as a whole in spite of drought conr -ditions and travel restrictions. The Grand Parade furnished an Inspiring spectacle which would be hard to surpass in any other provincial centre. The. light horse section was particularly impressive, quality .-and breeding being apparent in the

.magnificent hurdlers which were entered in the main ring events. The .heavy draughts were also a striking where Messrs Sisam and Sons once again were well to the fore. .Some fine breeding bulls headed the. ■dairy section which though not so .large as in pre-war years was nevertheless indicative of the remarkably high standard of districtbred stock. The afternoon was mainly devoted no the running of the popular ring ■events which did not terminate until ■6.30 p.m. Here was seen some of the . bestf horse flesh in the South Auckland competing for pride of place in thrilling scries of spectacular competitions. The main event of the ■day the Bay of Plenty Championship was won by G. HjJl of Taneatua with Dixon and Davies (Opotiki) entry ia close second. Mr A. Nielson another Opotiki sportsman was> also a prominent competitor in the hurdling events. The judge of the Jersey section, Mr W. T. Luxton had the warmest praise for the type of cattle coming forward. The champion cow (Mr J,. S. Rae) he declared would hold its own anywhere. In the Friesian section the judge (Mr R. G. Mclntosh) Spoke well of the entries, which however were mainly limited to one exhibitor, Mr G. J. Murray,. Sheep and pigs produced strong .competitional sections. Of the former the judge,, Mr D. Walker, mentioned the line showing bv Messrs. Walter Thompson and B. Sladden, .and praised the pens entered by the Native Department. Mr S. M. .Jeplison for the pigs considered the standard excellent and a further indication of the dairyman’s effort If .; farm wisely by co-ordinating pigrearing with dairying. E. R. Hunts large whites, were of excellent type, while t,he porkers and ba'concrs coming forward were in splendid condition. Shed exhibits were weak, and will need strong stimulus to regain their iold place in the. show. Exhibits -were however of good quality and it is a pity that greater interest is not taken in what could be made one of the brightest spots in the exhibition. Sideshows were in greater prominence than ever and served to maintain a steady interest lor show patrons throughout the day. The .commercial stands were also fully .occupied and. once again serve to in-, dicate the steady progress of manufacturers generally in getting back to a peace-time basis. The Whakatane Boys and Pipe Bands were in attendance and provided bright musical interludes. Mr Freddie Burt, who now holds first .class district honours as announcer was again on the ‘mike’ and carried the show on his back by his topical .commentary of all events. The greatest praise must go to the President (Mr W. Howat) and his hardworking secretary (Mr Tom Harland) for their indefatiguable efforts. From the public’s point of view there were no hitches of any .description during the day. The Show was unanimously voted a grand success by all who attended. The gate yielded the record figure of £290, and the attendance is estimated as varying from 3000 and 4000.

TEAM MARCHING

LOCAL GIRLS COMPETE

One of the highlights of the Show last Wednesday was the inarching display provided by five local teams of young ladies under the aeges of the recently formed Marching Club. The bearing and smartness of the girls caused widespread comment; and there can lie no doubt but that the display was the outcome of much arduous training and practice. The widespread popularity of. the innovation insures its annual appearance at the Show in future and bears out the contention that the Whakatane Club will continue to be represented at many local gatherigs and others further afield. Wednesday’s exhibition showed an improving standard on recent appearances and we take this opportunity of wishing the girls, who represent Whakatane at the forthcoming Highland Band gathering at Rotorua,. the best of luck. Points and placings at the Show were as under: —
