COUNTIES CONFERENCE
PETROL TAX DIVERSIONS ROADS SUFFER IN CONSEQUENCE ***'
At the conference of the Rotorua Tauranga Opotiki and Whakatano County Councils held recently under the newly inaugurated Ward system a matter discussed of outstanding interest to counties was'the way in which the proceeds from petrol taxation were diverted to other purposes. Since the inception of the petrol tax £47 000,000 had been collected and of this amount only £17,000,000 had been s-pent on roads. £28.000,000 had been diverted to other purposes. The present position of the Main Highways Board's finances, was that the board was obliged to borrow to maintain its assets and at the present time the board was owing to the. Consolidated Fund in arrears of. interest an amount of £BOO,OOO. In the speaker's opinion, the accounts of the Main Highways Board should show separately, expenditure on main and state highways, for in his opinion, in several highway districts main highways were starved » tor" funds.
