ABATTOIR QUESTION
FACILITY FOR BOROUGH BUILDING SITE SOUGHT Cr C. Good again raised the question of Borough Abattoirs at the meeting of the. Borough Council last .Monday claiming that in the inter-* ests of. public health it was essential to have such an establishment. The Town Clerk (Mr D. V. Sauncl r «rs) traced the history of the move to build an abattoirs which originated in 1942 when the Building Controllei suggested that a further application be made in six months time. Since ■then no further approach had been .made.
Cr Good warned that with the ‘Government tendency to centralise there was a chance that District Abattoirs might be built at Tauranga and the whole of the meat lor consumption served from that
Gr Morpeth was also strongly in favour of establishing the local unit .•as quickly as possible.
Cr-Shapley stated that the time •was inopportune as much of the ma■chinery and metal necessary was. unprocurable . On Cr Good’s motion it was clej.cided to go further into the question of securing a site and to re:approach the Building Controller enquiring the prospects of securing a jpermit.
