Fall From Tree

Falling from a Mr D. Palm* er of Taneatua, was yesterday admitted to the Whakatane Public Hospital suffering from head injur* ies. His condition is still serious.

Wharf Closing on Saturdays The Whakatane Harbour Board has decided that when the wharf is not required for shipping on Saturday’s that it be closed. Arrangements will always be made lor the handling of urgent shipments whatever time they arrive in port.

Cemetery Improvements

Writing the Borough Council Mrs A. Robb drew attention to the urgent need for better access to the Hill Cemetery where she claimed proper gates should be and a road cattle stop constructed. The Council agreed with the points rais-' ed and instructed the Works Committee to go into the matter.

Hospital Water Supply The Whakatane Hospital Board decided yesterday to purchase a £9O high, pressure pump for the purpose of installing a water supply to the vegetable gardens. The total cost of reticulation was estimated at roughly £l3O and the work was described as urgent. Steps towards its installation will be made imme-< diately.

Whakatane Club Shoot Postponed Owing to the fact that the Taneatua Rod and Gun Club intends holding a similar event Patriotic purposes on February 17, the Whakatane Rod and Gun Club has decided to postpone its shoot till a later day.

Harbour Board's Picnic Invitations to attend the- annual picnic organised by the. "tyhakatane Harbour Board will shortly be received by local body representatives in the Whakatane district. At the meeting of the Whakatane Hospital Board yesterday it was de-i cided to secure the following items of equipment: Men’s ward:, Urn (£l2 15s) i( plate warmer (£67 10s), clothes room £4l) twelve convalescent chairs (37/6 each); Sisters sitting room feltex covering £2O. The question of installing an electric, stove in the Annexe (estimate £52 11s 6d) was held over for next year’s estimates.

Possible Vegetable Famine

During the discussion on the use of hoses in the Borough, the Town Clerk Mr D. V. Saunders, stated that a complete ban on the use of hoses would mean that it would be impossible for residents, to cultivate their vegetable seedlings for winter sowing. He predicted that owing to so many people giving up gardening there was every likelihood of a severe vegetable famine occurring next winter. He urged therefore that hoses should still be permitted within the Borough if only to help in the cul-> ture. of seedlings.

Combined Orphanages Appeal

The Whakatane Borough Council has approved Friday } October 25 as the day for the annual street col-, lection on behalf of the Combined Orphanages appeal sponsored by the Auckland United Council. This date coincides with others throughout the Province.

Opouriao Anniversary

The fiftieth anniversary of the settling of the Opouriao Estate will be celebrated on Monday, March 5 in the Taneatua Domain. It is hoped to mark the occasion by inviting the school to close and to run a sports meeting for the benefit of the children. A general invitation is extended to the public.

Wainui-Te-Whara Water Supply The question of whether or not the stream from the Maraetotara Gorge would be suitable for damming as a permanent source of water for the town was mentioned at last Monday’s meeting of. the Borough Council. It was pointed out that the drought jieriod furnished a unique opportunity for testing the flow. The Foreman Engineer stated that a fortnight ago he had measured 00,000 gallons daily. He was fairly certain that there would still lie a flow of 60,000 gallons. He undertook to make a fresh check up.
