COURSE OF STATE HIGHWAY
REPRESENTATIONS TO MINISTER
HARBOUR BOARD WITH BOROUGH
The fact that the of Works (Hon. R. Semple) will be visiting Whakatane towards the end of the present month, has given the local bodies of this town a further opportunity of approaching him with regard to the potential course of the Tauranga-Whakatanc State Highway, and the manner in which it will link up •with the Borough.
A year ago ia conference between the Borough Council and Harbour Board was held and the outcome was unanimity on the point of representing that the course should he first along the. waterfront and behind the Pa to ilillcrcst, or alternatively through the Maraetotara Gorge (Wal-nui-te-whara). Such a course was to have been represented to the Minister earlier f hut his pending visit will provide the first opportunity for a personal deputation. The matter was discussed at the last meeting of the Whakatane Harbour Board when the chairman (Mr W. R. Boon) suggested that every advantage should he taken of the Minister’s visit to bring the suggestion to his notice. He urged that the Borough Council, Chamber of Commerce and the Board should wait on the Minister in a joint deputation if one could he arranged. \ Messrs C. T. Smith and Richardson were both strongly in favour <• the scheme and it was decided to notify the Borough Council that the Board Avould be pleased to identity with the Borough in its representations to the Minister with regard to the bringing of the Tauranga State Highway through the Borough.
