CLARKE SHIELD MATCH WIN FOR TANEATUA At the Taneatua Domain on Sunday a further game was. played in the Clarke Shield competition between Taneatua and Whakatane, Taneatua coming home to a comfortable win lay the wide margin of 62 runs on the first innings. Wha-
katane won the toss and sent Tanc-i atua in to bat. With the grass almost non-existent, and the. outlield as dry as W. C. Field’s humour, runs came at a faster rate than usual. Taneatu’a opened with Shaw and 1.. McCready, but both had returned to the pavilion before double figures, had been reached, Shaw be-> ing caught by wicketkeeper Cameron off Fisher and McCready, as the result of an excellent catch by Spring in the slips oil' Fisher once again, the latter concentrating on making the ball rise sharply. Keesing and Rivett who followed, changed the outlook of the game by settling down to fast -scoring and although both gave chances neither was afraid io attack the bowling and bad VO up before Keesing was caught off liigden. Shortly after Rivett was caught oil Crawford. The only other batsman who put on the score was B. McGougan, who in a slashing innings hit six fours, and two sixes in a score of 48, before being eauglit behind by Cameron off Spring. With just over '3O runs from the remaining Taneatua batsmen and 18 byes, the innings closed at 190. For Whakatane, Spring was the most successful" bowler, taking 3 for 33 with Fisher Rigden and Guptill taking 2 each.
Whakatane’s innings opened with Spring and, Crawford, both of whom batted freely, until, with the score at 40 Crawford was run out as the result of an excellent throw-in by IV. McCready. Fisher, who followed, had 12 up when he was clean bowled by Shaw’s first ball; his first, incidentally, since his return from overseas. (Congratulations tan). With the exception of Cameron, Who reached double figures before playing a ball from McGougan, on to his wicked, and Spring who played, a faultless innings for 71 before being caught in the outfield by McGougan off Rivett, the rest of the side fared badly being all out for 128, giving Taneatua a win on the first innings.
